Vintage suede fringe jacket, J. Crew suede loafers, Madewell tunic shirt, Trash & Vaudeville vegan leather pants

Have you ever had an item on your ultimate wish list that you were never able to actually find in real life but you continued to dream away, hoping that one day, its perfect iteration would magically show up in your life? People, I hereby present you that special piece on my list: the tan fringe suede jacket.

It spent years lingering on my fall must-by lists, jumping from one year to another without me ever having been able to scratch it off. Fortunately for me, I live in a neighborhood that is ripe with all kinds of vintage goodness and I stumbled upon this little treasure after aimlessly wandering on a Saturday afternoon with some friends. Catching my eye right away, I slipped it on and it fit like a glove. It was basically fate.

Its vintage character makes it even better than any piece I could have gotten brand new. It was love at first sight and I think we're in it for the long haul.

I'll Meet You Where the Sea Meets the Sky

Shore Projects watch, Nordstrom, Bloomingdale's, I'll meet you where the sea meets the sky, gift box set

As you know, I always try to keep things very simple with my attire. And if you're not aware of this personal style mantra of mine, all the evidence is right here on this blog. I just have a disdain for fussing. But that doesn't mean I don't want to put some effort into how I look or dress, because, after all, this is a style blog and at the end of the day, I care very much.

That said, one way to make sure that you're always at the top of your game, no matter how casual or how dolled up you've gotten yourself, one thing should remain consistent: your accessories. And that goes for whether you're trying to keep it minimal or going all swaggy. As a person of a certain age (gulp), I'm quite done with experimenting with trends, as I feel as though I've come into my own when it comes to personal style. I know what I like, what I don't, and more importantly, what I feel like myself in. In short, I've nailed down my sartorial affinities and I'm sticking to them.

I'm not huge on over-accessorizing, but I do believe in getting it just right. That usually means one to three chain necklaces, stud earrings and a killer pair of sunglasses. However, lately I've become quite enamored with an item that has turned into a huge staple in my ornament game: the wrist watch. My heart has been stolen by Shore Projects, this amazing company that embodies their seaside-inspired brand.

One of the reasons for why I fell for Shore Projects is because you don't have to settle for one style, nor do you have to double down or buy a whole bunch of different models for versatility because, drum roll please, they have interchangeable wrist bands. Basically you just have to choose a face you love and then just get all sorts of different bands to be able to serve each one of your outfits.

In these shots I'm wearing the all black version, but I also have a gold chain metal band and a tan one, so I'm never without it since all of these iterations cater to any ensemble I put together. In fact, the box set makes a great Christmas gift, if you're still looking.

Year End Mood Board

I know, the blog posts are sparse, forgive me. The year already being over seems like an apt metaphor to describe the terrible affliction I am plagued with: I literally don't have time for anything. And unfortunately blogging has taken a back, back seat. That said, I will still post sporadically and please keep up with my adventures on Instagram if you feel inclined to :)

For the new year, I give you a mood board full of ease, personality and comfortable polish to inspire a year of feeling good in your own skin. How's that for a resolution? Happy new year my dears xx

Hello, 2016! First blog of the year, I know, I'm a little (fashionably?) late to the party. Whoopsie.

That said, better late than never. Here's an ensemble I threw together to look "professional" (whatever that means), but in true moi form, it's not super polished. Just a twinge dressy. Always all black, safe for the tote. Can't really go wrong with the absence of color, right?

Especially when in New York.

I have an aversion to bodycon, that's probably a well-known fact on this blog and that hasn't changed in a very long time. That means that no one is probably surprised to see me gallivanting about Brooklyn here in extremely oversized garments. Who wouldn't want to play with proportions for a day of, well, play?!

A beautiful fall afternoon (yes, this is from a few months ago) was the perfect setting to take this aviator jacket (poor man's Acne, natch) for a spin, as the sun shined down on my face and the coffee kept me warm.

Also the ideal attire to go from the park to the bar. Oh, sweet, sweet weekends.

It was truly astounding that there was no snow whatsoever when we were in Montreal around the holidays. It wasn't warm per say, but the cold was definitely tolerable in this getup.

Of course, had to take my man around for a spin to see the best of what the city has to offer. While he's been to my hometown a bunch of times, we're always usually so busy seeing friends and family that we never actually take time to take in the sights. Had to show him how beautiful the city is and brought him to the very top of the mountain for an ensemble view of what lies below.

And then he took a some photos of my ensemble, ha.

PS i know these are kind of redundant, but I liked all of them, so I take full responsibility for the multiplicity.

Winter Beach

fashion over reason, jersey shore winter beach, reformation, free people

I'm not much of a beach person. I attribute that to the fact that I am from the Great White North, aka a place where there aren't really any beaches. The ones we do have and that I frequented growing up were far from the dreamy white sand beaches that lead to crystal clear aqua blue waves that crash onto them. Our beaches were super grainy with dark sand pouring into dark lake water that harbored extremely creepy critters. You know, the kind that never really gets warm.

That said, when I do happen to get to the ocean (like, the real ocean, with salt water and everything), there is something quite magical and serene about the whole setting, especially in the winter time. Hard to believe, but there is hardly anyone around the beach when it's cold (har har), which is part of the appeal. It looks so distant and uninviting, yet so peaceful and poetic all at once.

We were on the Jersey Shore this past weekend for a family affair and the waterfront was beckoning us.

This is a lost series I just came across, but even though my hair seems a lot shorter than it is now, these photos were actually taken less than a year ago. Which seems kind of crazy cause my current length feels so long right now compared to this. But I digress.

While these photos were taken months ago, they convey a feeling that we can all relate to at this very time of year: when winter has gone on for too long and the chill is still real, but we just want to wear spring clothes and stop being cooped up inside. It's when all we can dream of are palm trees and California. Thoughts of gallivanting about the bleary streets during a sweetly warm day at sunset on our way to grab cocktails.

Le sigh.

Lusting for an escape from winter is what these shots encapsulate. Let's move south. Who's with me?!

Weekend Rendezvous

Heleneisfor bb dakota, Céline Edge bag, Free People boots, NYC

When you live in Brooklyn, there's kind of an unwritten rule/unspoken understanding among us outer-borough dwellers that going into Manhattan (or "the city", as we say) on weekends is pretty much off the table in any way, shape or form. The general consensus is that it's really annoying. Unless you have a brunch, an appointment or are just into torturing yourself taking the subway, people just tend to lay low in their respective I-never-need-to-actually-leave-my-neighborhood section located across the East River.

Behold! I broke the don't ask don't tell commandment that unifies the denizens of Brooklyn. And I liked it.

It was one of those great leisurely Sundays where my hubby and I met some friends for food, walked around some of our most beloved NYC streets and stopped into a few of our favorite stores for a little shopping. Random days like that just remind you that sometimes, you really ought to break the rules more often, no matter how unofficial they are.

The Sweater Dress

J.Crew coat, Free People sweater dress, Modern Vintage boots, vintage fur hat, Bottega Veneta bag

One of my favorite things to wear in life is a good sweater dress. They're so cozy and easy to throw on, all while being chic enough in that nonchalant kind of way. Know what I mean? It's like, no one could ever look bad in one of these. It's basically one of those pieces that will guarantee to raise your cool factor.

Anyway. As you know, I'm also a big fan of playing with proportions, so pairing my dress with over-the-knee boots to look kind of like tights was a bit of a no-brainer for this look. I was also totally inspired by a 70s vintage-y vibe, so I was feeling pretty on point with my ensemble. The vintage fur hat (courtesy of my grandad!) was like a cherry atop the sundae.

All for a super bomb boozy lunch date with my man.

Spring is lurking backstage while winter hangs onto every ounce of its last, numbered days. I long to shed all the layers, to not curse out loud when I forget my gloves at home, to not have to bundle up in a heavy jacket when stepping outside, to strop dreading having to take Wally out for a walk, to be able to sit outdoors for happy hour... That's part of the reason for why I'm currently on a flight to the warmer pastures of Los Angeles. Enjoy this mood board while the mercury finishes its slow climb.

Thredding On Up!

$

Heleneisfor, Fashion Over Reason, ThredUp blog MiuMiu leather pants, Icelandic Wool sweater, Céline Edge bag, Chloe Baobab boots

You guys, I have to let you in on a little shopping secret. It's called ThredUp and it's going to change the way you re-energize your closet. It's basically a giant online thrift store that carries all the coolest brands, like Rag & Bone, J Brand, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Alexander Wang, etc... You can actually send all the clothes that you no longer wear and get new stuff to replace it.

The pants I'm wearing in these photos? Amazing, mint condition leather Miu Miu for a little over 100 bucks. Crazy, I know. Anyway, other than the fact that it's a super easy way to shop for lazy girls like me, I also enjoy it because it ties into a few of my values and personal preferences:

1. I love thrifting and vintage clothing. The old saying rings true: one person's trash is another person's treasure. Not only can you find such gems for a fraction of the cost, but you can also pretty much a guarantee that there is no chance to spot anyone else in the same clothes as you.

2. While I enjoy myself some high quality garments, I also love scoring a good bargain. I mean, who doesn't?!

3. The older I get, the more averse I am becoming to fast fashion, and a part of my new year's resolutions was to reduce dramatically/challenge myself to not buy one fast fashion item this year (so far so good). There are many reasons for this, one of them being this eye-opening movie - it's on Netflix and I urge you all to watch it ASAP. It's easy to bury your head in the sand and ignore the problem when you're so far removed, but if I'm not actively part of the solution, I at least don't want to contribute to the issue. Which I realize is ironic, me being a fashion blogger and all, but yes, I am trying to give consumerism the middle finger.

4. It's good for the environment. New stuff = more waste. Old stuff being recycled = things going in circle. Common sense.

5. I'm like the opposite of a hoarder and am constantly getting rid of things. I do a huge closet purge twice per year and bring in a fresh rotation of pieces. ThredUp is basically made for this kind of cycle, aka my dream come true.

So yeah, it's pretty much an ideal way to get new things into your closet while clearing out what you no longer wear, and being good to the planet while you're at it. Literally a win-win-win.

And because I love you guys, click here to get $10 off your order. Let me know what you end up getting, I would love to know!

Zady wool coat, Free People boots, Monki jeans, Miu Miu wallet, Ray-Ban sunglasses

There's nothing sweeter in life than when the cold weather starts to turn into a warm breeze and you no longer need to wear a scarf and gloves everywhere you go. There's nothing quite like the feeling of walking around with your coat wide open once winter is over and not feeling cold. There's nothing like the smell of springtime lurking in the air, almost like the atmosphere is thawing.

I often sing the praises of autumn in the city, but springtime is up there, too. It's just as magical, if not more, and it gives people a renewed sense of hope, highly in part due to daylight savings. No more darkness, no more cold, no more seasonal depression. Trees budding, flowers blooming, birds chirping. Magic.

Yep, I love spring.

As you likely know from my Instagram (definitely follow if you don't already!), I was in LA a couple of weeks ago visiting some friends and gallivanting about. We take a yearly trip out there and every time we go, I fall in love a little more with this town.

There's something about Los Angeles that is so very rock 'n roll - and I think that Hedi Slimane would agree with that statement. Weirdly, the palm trees and laid back way of life paired with the undeniable twinkle in the air that floats around constantly thanks to the Hollywood factor lends the city this intangible essence that makes it a bit of a magical place, albeit with dark edges. It's kind of a locale of legend that makes an outsider like me believe in the vibes.

I know I shouldn't be saying this as a New Yorker, because, well, something about us cynics not giving into the Cali Kool-Aid. But I really do love LA. And because I always inject a bit of rock 'n roll into my ensembles, this Saint Laurent-inspired look felt like the perfect thing to wear on a chilly 65 degree amazing California day.

Free People sweater dress, Adidas Stan Smith, Céline Edge bag, Venice Beach, Los Angeles, California

So basically I've already sang the praises of this sweater dress, so I'll spare you more reverence, but just know that my affections have far exceeded my expectations when it comes to this piece of clothing, which I naively thought would exclusively be my go-to for wintry femininity.

Turns out, it's also an amazing transitional piece to take me from the never-ending frigid cold season straight into the warm embrace of spring. I tested out my theory in California, as you see me here perusing the likes of one of my favorite Venice Beach shopping destinations, Tumbleweed & Dandelion, and can firmly assert that the results are in.

Conclusion: say yes to the sweater dress! It will take you much further (and farther!) and than you think, case in point.

When Spring is Shy

Zady coat, Helmut Lang dress, Chloé boots, Bottega Veneta bag, Trash & Vaudeville pants

I cannot even tell you how annoyed I currently am at the month of April. It didn't start off very promising, with an April Fool's day fit for, well, a fool, and while I'm all to familiar with the 'April showers, May flowers' mantra, there's nothing out there about showers taking the form of snowflakes. Ugh.

No end in sight, yet still I know it's near (May, can you hear me?!).

In considering the fact that April has been under-performing, I feel as though I can take it because the winter that just ended blessed us with utter clemency and I reckon that filing a complaint now to Mother Nature would be akin to reprimanding a recovering sugar addict indulging in a candy bar after completing a CrossFit program. So I'm cutting you a break, oh mighty weather Mother!

Also, springtime being trigger-shy basically means that I get to wear this black Zady coat (which is on sale, btw!) a little while longer. If you're not familiar with this brand, do yourself and the planet a favor and get acquainted. I began a conversation during my ThredUp post from a few weeks ago about my environmentalist tendencies and my desire to move towards conscious consumerism and slow fashion.

If you align with me on these convictions, then I urge you to discover Zady, because their brand values encapsulate everything we should think about when making a purchase, but too often turn a blind eye to.

Stay tuned for more Zady-ness on the blog, I have some of their spring pieces that I can't wait to show you!
